The 4th of July was a full day of celebration at Buddha Gate Monastery. This joyful event honors our commitment and patriotism. It also reminds us of our dedication to each other. Finally, this is a day of appreciation.
We began the morning with a July 4th Festival. Under rows of beautiful white canopies, members of the monastery sold delicious and unique homemade food, treats and drinks. Children enjoyed activities such as candle making, calligraphy, and tie-dyed shirt making. All proceeds went toward future programs at the monastery.
The evening was filled with music and entertainment, abundant and delicious food and respectful Buddhist practice. The entertainment included song and instrumental presentations and demonstrations by BGM children and members. The atmosphere was one of relaxed camaraderie. Because this event was held outdoors, we also appreciated the added beauty of the natural setting.
While enjoying the program, we feasted on the delicious vegetarian potluck meal. Everyone was then invited to make a candle offering to dispel our illusions and enlighten our pure mind. After the offering, as the sun was setting, the Dharma Masters of Buddha Gate led us in chanting the Heart Sutra, followed by a Mountain Pilgrimage. The pilgrimage ended under the moonlight with a dedication to all sentient beings.
At the end of the evening, we watched the night sky light up with a spectacular vista of the various firework displays from the surrounding communities.
The 4th of July at Buddha Gate is a joyful annual mid summer event and is a perfect way to honor each other, our country and Buddhism.
